Richmond Highway 580 Off-Ramp Reopens After Tanker Truck Crash, Diesel Spill
RICHMOND (CBS SF) - An Interstate Highway 580 off-ramp in Richmond has reopened and cleanup is nearly completed after a morning crash involving a double-tanker truck caused a diesel fuel spill, police and hazardous materials officials said.
Around 7:45 a.m., a flatbed truck hit the parked tanker truck in the 500 block of Hoffman Boulevard, puncturing one of the tanks and causing it to leak diesel fuel, Richmond police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
The driver of the flatbed truck and a passenger suffered cuts and other minor injuries and were treated at the scene, she said.
About 1,400 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the tanker truck into storm drains and a nearby culvert, and prompted the closure of the 500 block of Hoffman Boulevard, as well as the Harbour Way off-ramp on eastbound Highway 580, according to Contra Costa County hazardous materials specialist Adam Springer.
The off-ramp reopened around 1 p.m., and Hoffman Boulevard was expected to reopen around 4 p.m., after crews finished mopping up the spilled diesel, Abetkov said.
A county hazardous materials team also used a vacuum truck to suck out the remaining diesel in the tanker truck, Springer said.
He said the spilled diesel is "hazardous, but not as hazardous as gasoline."
