Evacuation Lifted After Bomb Scare At Richmond Federal Building
RICHMOND (CBS SF) - An evacuation order at the Frank Hegel Federal Building in Richmond was lifted Friday afternoon after a suspicious package was determined to contain only flashlights and batteries, the city's fire chief said.
The evacuation order was lifted around 1:15 p.m., according to Richmond Fire Chief Michael Banks.
Several hundred people were initially evacuated from the six-story building at 1221 Nevin Ave. shortly after 10 a.m. after an employee called 911 to report a suspicious package with unknown contents, Banks said.
The suspicious contents had been detected during an X-ray by building security, Banks said.
A bomb squad from University of California at Berkeley responded to the scene during the incident, he said.
