81-Year-Old Retired Oakland Cop Charged In Sex Exploitation Scandal
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Contra Costa County prosecutors on Wednesday charged a retired Oakland police captain with a misdemeanor for his alleged role in the Bay Area's widespread police sexual exploitation scandal involving a teen girl.
The county district attorney's office charged 81-year-old Al Perrodin with one count of soliciting prostitution for allegedly paying to have sex with the teenager, now 19, who is at the center of the scandal.
District Attorney Mark Peterson has said that Perrodin admitted to paying the woman for sex at a Richmond hotel in February.
It's the only prosecution expected out of Peterson's office, which investigated claims that 13 officers and sheriff's deputies from five different departments had sex with the girl at different times from February to April of 2016.
Peterson said there is not enough evidence to charge any of the other officers in Contra Costa County with having sex with her when she was underage or for paying to have sex with her.
Four other Oakland police officers, a Livermore police officer and a Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy have been charged with crimes in Alameda County. A fifth Oakland police officer, Warit Uttapa, might also face a misdemeanor charge of knowingly conducting a search of official criminal justice computer systems without an authorized purpose, but so far no charges have been filed.
A total of 12 Oakland officers and 11 Richmond officers were disciplined in the case. Richmond police Chief Allwyn Brown previously said that the department's internal investigation determined none of his officers' actions were criminal.
Two of the officers investigated by Peterson's office are from the San Francisco Police Department and are facing an internal affairs investigation.
