Representative Speier Proposes Stricter Safety Standards For Toys
BURLINGAME (KCBS) --- A Bay Area Congresswoman says something must be done to protect children from some of the gifts they received for Christmas.
Representative Jackie Speier plans to introduce legislation next month.
Speier said her Toxic Metals Protection Act would set new limits for the amounts of heavy metals found in items used by children such as children's jewelry and drinking glasses.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
The Peninsula Democrat said that US safety standards lag behind other countries.
"Your best bet is to buy your toys for your children and products for your children in Europe," she said.
The proposal would be the first effort by Congress to deal with the issue of toxic substances in children's items since McDonald's earlier this year recalled more than 12 million glasses that contained cadmium.
Speier says glassware is a big concern, since those items can be used by children many times over.
