Report Confirms Bay Area Has Some Of The Nation's Worst Traffic
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — A new report confirms the Bay Area has some of the worst traffic in the country, and drivers should expect things to get worse.
The report from Inrix found San Francisco with the third worst traffic in the nation, while San Jose reached seventh place on the list. Not surprisingly, Los Angeles topped the list.
The data shows traffic is up three percent in San Francisco and up 13 percent in San Jose.
Bay Area Not Faring Very Well In List of Nation's Worst Traffic Conditions
According to Gary Richards, who writes the Roadshow column for the San Jose Mercury News, the data is about a year behind.
While those figures suggest the jammed conditions are just up a tick from 2011, the growth of the tech industry in San Francisco has fueled the commute from the East Bay. Traffic in the San Jose area is also bogging down as the amount of jobs picks up.
"I think you're going to see San Jose go up next year because I just know from experience— 101, basically from the Morgan Hill area up until Redwood City is just a mess," Richards said.
Eastbound Highway 4 from Bailey to Somersville in the afternoon drive is listed as the 25th worst ride in the nation. The lower deck of the Bay Bridge from 101 to Treasure Island is the 46th worst. And northbound 680 from Scott Creek to Andrade ranks at 57th.
Richards said the most congested morning commute is Tuesday while the worst in the evening is generally Thursday. Friday is one of the better morning commutes, but no so much for the evening, which Richards called "horrible."
