Rep. Jackie Speier Fires Back After House Republicans Pass Anti-Abortion Bill
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- House Republicans passed an anti-abortion bill Thursday night, but not the one they planned.
Republican leaders hoped to pass a bill banning abortions after 20-weeks, but retreated after some GOP women rebelled.
Anti-abortion demonstrators marched outside the capitol on the 42nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling.
Democrats responded sharply to the bill. "There are even some hypocrites on the other side of the aisle who have counseled their own girlfriends to have abortions," Representative Jackie Speier of San Mateo said.
Under the measure that did pass, federal funds can't be used to pay for abortions, but even that watered down bill will likely hit a roadblock in the Senate.
