Andy Reid Targeted Alex Smith For Trade While With Eagles
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CBS Sports) -- When Andy Reid took over the Kansas City Chiefs this past off-season, there was a large, noticeable, glaring hole at quarterback. Reid didn't mess around when it came to filling that hole, handing the San Francisco 49ers a pair of second-round picks for Alex Smith in a stunning off-season trade.
Turns out this past summer wasn't the first time Reid made an an attempt to land Smith from the 49ers (although it was, obviously, the first successful attempt). Reid acknowledged to the New York Times, in a piece that ran Sunday, that he tried "multiple" times to trade for Smith while he was head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles.
"I just always watched him and thought, 'Man, I'd like to coach that kid,'" Reid said.
