Quakes' Standout Wondolowski Named To U.S. Gold Cup Team
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski has been named to the United States National Team roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup and will join the U.S. for training camp on Sunday, May 29.
"Being named to the US National Team is an incredible honor and I'm excited to get to work with the guys next week," Wondolowski said. "This is a dream come true to get out there and represent my country in an elite competition like the Gold Cup."
Wondolowski, 28, who attended De La Salle-Concord High School and Chico State, was the leading scorer in Major League Soccer in 2010 with 18 goals in 26 games. The forward from Danville has five goals in the Earthquakes' 10 games this year.
The U.S. team, coached by Bob Bradley, have a June 4 exhibition in Foxborough, Mass., against World Cup champion Spain, followed by the tournament that decides the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.
The U.S. opens group play June 7 in Detroit, Mich. against Canada. They play Panama on June 11 in Tampa, Fla., and close the first round against Guadeloupe on June 14 at Kansas City, Kansas. The final will be June 25 at the Rose Bowl.
