'Quakes Acquire Lenhart From Crew In Draft Day Trade
SAN JOSE (CBS) -- The San Jose Earthquakes acquired forward Steven Lenhart from the Columbus Crew on Thursday in a trade for their 15th overall pick in Major League Soccer's 2011 Draft.
Lenhart was second on the Crew last season with six goals. He also had a pair of assists in 27 appearances, including 17 starts. He was selected by the Crew with the 48th pick in the 2008 draft.
"Steven is a young player at only 24 years old, but he has three years of experience in MLS," said 'Quakes General Manager John Doyle. "He is a big forward who is difficult for defenders to handle. We think he can come in and help bolster our attack."
In three seasons in Columbus, he made 69 appearances - including six playoff games - and had 14 goals and four assists.
"I have always liked Steven and the way he plays," said 'Quakes head coach Frank Yallop. "He's a big, strong, fast forward who is excellent in the air. We are excited to start working with him."
With their second round pick (33rd overall), the Earthquakes selected midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong from the University of Akron.
Ampaipitakwong helped the Zips to their first ever national championship in 2010 with an overtime win in the College Cup Final against Louisville. He was a co-captain on a team that lost just two games over the past two years.
