Prosecution Moves To Keep Dugard Kidnap Documents Sealed
PLACERVILLE (AP) -El Dorado County's district attorney is objecting to efforts to make public transcripts from the grand jury that indicted the couple accused of kidnapping Jaycee Dugard.
District Attorney Vern Pierson said in a court filing Wednesday that permitting the news media to view the transcripts now would give Phillip and Nancy Garrido's lawyers grounds for seeking a change of venue.
Pierson said it would also violate Dugard's privacy to release the transcripts before the case goes to trial since she testified before the grand jury about "extremely private and violent sexual acts" she allegedly experienced at the hands of the Garridos.
Several news organizations, including The Associated Press, have asked to have the grand jury transcripts unsealed. A judge is scheduled to consider the matter on Nov. 4.
