Polling Expert, Who Promised To 'Eat A Bug' If Trump Won, Gulps Cricket On CNN
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Among pollsters and prognosticators, perhaps none was more certain that Hillary Clinton would be elected president last Tuesday than Sam Wang.
On his influential website Princeton Election Consortium, Dr. Wang, a neuroscientist and professor at Princeton University, presents statistically sophisticated analyses of presidential and congressional campaign polls.
The weekend before the election, Dr. Wang promised host Michael Smerconish on CNN's "Smerconish" that he would "eat a bug" if then-candidate Trump won more than 240 Electoral College votes.
As of Saturday, President-elect Donald Trump's count in the Electoral College stood at 290 (with the winner of Michigan's 16 and New Hampshire's 4 electoral votes yet to be determined).
So, on Saturday, Dr. Wang returned to "Smerconish" to explain how he -- and most other polling experts -- goofed.
"A lot of people were wrong but nobody else made the promise I did," Wang admitted, before popping a honey-soaked cricket into his mouth as Smerconish grinned on a split-screen.
"You're a man of your word," Smerconish told Wang.
On his Twitter page, Dr. Wang changed his profile picture to a ladybug.
