President Obama Fundraising In Bay Area For Boxer, Harris
PALO ALTO (CBS/AP/BCN) - President Barack Obama visited the Peninsula Thursday evening to raise money for democrats in key California races.
The president is in California as part of a two-day swing to raise money and campaign for Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is in a tight contest with Republican Carly Fiorina.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris were among the dignitaries waiting to greet him on the runway. He shook their hands then got into a black SUV and left the airport.
President Obama then met with Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the Westin Hotel for 45 minutes to talk about technology, education and innovation issues.
The Obama motorcade hit 380 and then 280 South to head to Atherton, where it was greeted by about 50 protesters carrying signs, "Hello FDR recovery," "Good bye, Wall Street traitors," "Obamanator," and "Kills jobs, kills hope." Also saw "Repeal Don't ask, don't tell."
Press vans are left outside the sprawling ranch home surrounded by olive trees and lush vegetation.
Obama was in Atherton to attend a $6500 a head photo op event for Harris, the Democratic candidate for Attorney General, and about 50 people were present for a $30,400 a head DNC fundraiser set for the evening in Palo Alto.
The president has vigorously stepped up his campaigning in recent days with fellow Democrats facing the specter of losing control of the House or Senate—or both—to Republicans on Nov. 2.
