Powerful 6.8 Earthquake Rocks Panama
Punta de Burica, Panama (CBS SF) -- A powerful earthquake measuring a preliminary 6.8 magnitude rocked Panama late Monday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was centered off the coast of Punta De Burica in the Central American nation just before midnight.
There are no reports about damages or injuries, but with a quake of this magnitude, it is highly likely.
"It was a pretty strong movement and there were several aftershocks, but in the monitoring we've carried out until now, we have not found material damage or injured people," Panama's national civil defense director Arturo Alvarado told the Associated Press.
No tsunami warnings were issued, despite the quake's epicenter dozens of miles out in the Pacific.
