Power Outage At Tom Lantos Tunnel Shuts Down Highway 1 In San Mateo County
SAN MATEO COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Authorities issued a severe traffic alert Tuesday afternoon following a power outage that is affecting the electronic signs at the Tom Lantos Tunnel in the Devil's Slide area, forcing the closure of CA-1.
CHP reported that the outage in the area of the Tom Lantos Tunnel had shut down northbound and southbound lanes of state Highway 1 between 9th Street and Linda Mar Boulevard in San Mateo County. All lanes have been closed.
The tunnel was eventually reopened at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
PG&E officials said that approximately 4,000 customers have been affected by the outage.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area. The initial estimated time of opening was 6 p.m. Shortly after that time, CHP announced that while power had been restored inside the tunnel, lanes in both directions would remain closed.
CHP initially said the estimated time of opening was 7 p.m., but later said the issue was still being solved and the time of reopening is unknown.
