Pot Growing Lights Spark Santa Rosa Duplex Fire
SANTA ROSA (BCN) - Lights used to grow marijuana overloaded an electrical circuit and caused a fire at a duplex in the Roseland area of Santa Rosa early Wednesday morning, Santa Rosa Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Jones said.
A couple living on the second floor of the duplex, located at 212 Barnett St., were alerted of the fire by smoke detectors at about 2:40 a.m., Battalion Chief Mark Basque said.
They informed their neighbors, and all residents exited the duplex before firefighters arrived.
The fire started in a bedroom that had been set up to accommodate a small marijuana grow, Basque said. It destroyed that room and caused moderate smoke damage to the rest of the unit.
The displaced couple are staying with relatives, Basque said.
The second unit was not damaged, he said.
The fire, which was controlled within 15 minutes, caused between
$20,000 and $25,000 in damage to the home, Jones said.
