Police Standoff With Suspect In Union City Ends Peacefully
UNION CITY (CBS SF) -- A police standoff with a suspect who allegedly held an ex-girlfriend captive for two days came to a peaceful end Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.
Officers initially responded to the 33900 block of Railroad Avenue at about 8:20 a.m. when a woman called 911 and quickly hung up after whispering that she needed help and that someone was armed, according to police.
The woman said the suspect, her ex-boyfriend, had held her captive for the past two days, police said.
Officers arrived and began talking with neighbors and residents to determine who was home.
Residents were advised to shelter in place as police negotiated with the suspect.
Police continued to communicate with the suspect. While he is refusing to exit the building, he is not making any active threats.
The woman who called 911 left the home on a stretcher and was taken to an area hospital. Police said she didn't offer them any additional information about her ex-boyfriend.
A second man in handcuffs was seen being taken away, but officers said he surrendered to police peacefully. Authorities said they didn't even know he was inside and that he was not the prime suspect.
Shortly after 3 p.m., a person was seen exiting the home crawling on hands and knees as police watched with guns drawn. SWAT team members then put the person in handcuffs and patted the individual down.
Union City police confirmed that the suspect was in custody at about 3:30 p.m. The shelter in place advisory was lifted and traffic in the area around Railroad Avenue and 10th Street returned to normal shortly after streets reopened.
Union City police later identified the suspect as 38-year-old Mario Martinez. Officers confirmed Martinez is known to the department.
Martinez is being held on charges of kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon and making criminal threats
Police remained on the scene as SWAT teams searched the home for evidence.
