Suspect Shot By Police In East Oakland Dies
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - Police shot and killed a suspect in East Oakland Wednesday afternoon that they say fled from officers while brandishing a gun.
The confrontation with three suspects began shortly before 2 p.m. when police spotted a car near 90th and Bancroft avenues and attempted to stop it believing at least one of the occupants was armed, police said.
The car sped away from police, and the officers chased it to 77th and Bancroft avenues where the three suspects got out and ran in different directions.
One officer found one of the three suspects around the corner in the 7700 block of Ritchie Street. Police said the officer saw that the suspect was armed and fired his gun at him.
The suspect was injured and treated by police until paramedics arrived and took him to a hospital, but he died a short time later.
Investigators found a loaded gun reported stolen out of Georgia that the suspect was allegedly carrying.
The other two suspects were found nearby after a brief search and detained, police said.
Police shut down roads near the shooting, including Bancroft Avenue between 77th and 80th avenues, the 2500 block of 79th Avenue and Ritchie Street between Olive and Hillside streets.
The shooting is being investigated by the department's major crimes and internal affairs divisions and the Alameda County District Attorney's office.
Anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to contact the Oakland Police Department's Major Crimes Section at (510) 238-3821 or the TIP LINE at 777-2805.
