Police Seek Leads In Mystery Of Decomposed Hayward Body
HAYWARD (CBS SF) - Leads are scarce in the investigation into the death of a young man whose decomposed body was found in an abandoned building in Hayward last week, police said Monday.
The body of 19-year-old Luis Calleros was found at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when a construction worker noticed a foul odor and followed the scent into a building at 28953 Mission Blvd. that formerly housed Perry & Key Body & Paint Shop, Sgt. Eric Krimm said.
The worker discovered Calleros' body and reported it to police. Calleros, who had been reported missing by his father on Oct. 23, was identified on Friday through dental records.
Krimm said it was not possible to find visible signs of trauma on Calleros' body because of the deterioration. He said police aren't discussing a potential cause of death yet, but that the case has been classified as a homicide.
Krimm said that when Calleros' father reported him missing, there was no indication of foul play and the only reason for concern was that Calleros had never gone missing before.
When Calleros' father told police about the disappearance, he said he had last seen his son the previous day, Oct. 22, Krimm said.
The father told police that Calleros was living at home with his family, but investigators learned that he was living with his girlfriend nearby, police said.
Krimm said Calleros didn't have a job, but his father told police that he was attending a training program for chefs one day a week. However, police weren't able to verify that information, he said.
Calleros' family members and friends held a vigil for him Sunday night outside the building where his body was found, according to Krimm.
