SF Bank Burglary Suspect Falls Through Rooftop Into Apartment Bedroom
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- A San Francisco man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and resisting arrest early Friday morning after he fell through a roof while fleeing from police, according to a police spokeswoman.
Police were called to the 2400 block of San Bruno Avenue around 3:45 a.m. on a report of a suspect attempting to break into an ATM machine at a bank, according to police.
Chief Greg Suhr told KPIX 5 the suspect got into the bank through a ventilation shaft and set off a silent alarm, and was spotted by officers as he went back out and was jumping from rooftop to rooftop while attempting to escape.
Officers spotted the suspect jumping between rooftops and set up a perimeter around the scene.
Police arrested the suspected bank burglar after he fell through the ceiling into an apartment bedroom.
John Franklin, 33, was taken into custody around 5 a.m., according to Sgt. Danielle Newman.
Suhr said the roughly 230-pound suspect was moving through a crawl space. When officers ordered him to stand up, he went crashing through the apartment ceiling into the occupied bedroom. He was armed with a crowbar, and dressed in black.
He was not injured severely enough to require hospitalization, Newman said. No information was available on the damage to the building's roof.
Franklin is being held on suspicion of two counts of burglary and one count of resisting arrest, Newman said.
