Police Dog Bit Meals On Wheels Carjacking Suspect Who Claimed To Have Bomb
FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A man and a woman were arrested Thursday after attempting a carjacking, leading police on a chase in a Meals on Wheels truck and threatening police with a bomb, police announced Friday.
Fremont residents Reginald Nunn, 45, and Latu Tapueluelu, 33, were arrested on suspicion of multiple offenses such as attempted carjacking, felony reckless evading and resisting arrest.
The incident started at 10:18 a.m. when police dispatchers received a call from a victim of an attempted carjacking at Walnut Avenue and Liberty Street, according to police.
The victim alleged that Nunn tried to reach into her vehicle to take her car.
When he failed he ran to a parking lot behind City Hall and he and Tapueluelu allegedly climbed into a Meals on Wheels truck as volunteers were loading it with food.
The two allegedly drove off and led police on a roughly 12.5-mile chase through Fremont, Union City, Hayward and Castro Valley until police were able to disable the vehicle on an on-ramp to Interstate Highway 580 at Redwood Road in Castro Valley, police said.
Nunn allegedly got out of the truck with a bag and claimed he had a bomb.
Because of the concerns he might have a bomb, police sent a dog to disable Nunn and the dog bit him in the leg. Nunn tried to fight the dog off by grabbing and pulling on his face and head, police spokeswoman Officer Geneva Bosques said.
When he was arrested at about 10:40 a.m., police found his bag contained only a sleeping bag and other items.
Officers also arrested Tapueluelu and an ambulance took both to a hospital to treat their moderate injuries, which were not life-threatening, according to police.
When the two were released, they were booked into the county jail.
No one else was injured in the incident, police said.
Police arrested Nunn on suspicion of additional offenses consisting of assaulting/willfully harming a police dog, auto theft and driving on a suspended license, according to police.
Tapueluelu was also arrested on suspicion of auto theft.
The two are set to be arraigned in Fremont Superior Court on May 9 at 2 p.m.
