Police Chase Shooting Suspects Across Bay Bridge From San Francisco To Oakland; 1 Arrested
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Three suspects in a shooting in San Francisco's Bayview District led authorities on a chase on the Bay Bridge and into Oakland early Sunday morning, a police spokeswoman said.
Officers were patrolling the area of Napoleon Street and Evans Avenue around 1:50 a.m. when they saw gunshots fired between a maroon SUV and blue vehicle, San Francisco police Officer Grace Gatpandan said.
The officers pursued the SUV as it went onto the freeway and continued east on the Bay Bridge, Gatpandan said.
Police continued to chase the suspects into Oakland with help from the California Highway Patrol, according to Gatpandan.
During the chase, one of the SUV's occupants threw a handgun out of the car on the bridge's eastern span, but police later recovered it, she said.
The SUV exited the freeway near Fruitvale Avenue and East Eighth Street in Oakland, crashed into a utility pole and came to rest near railroad tracks, she said.
The SUV's driver and two passengers fled the vehicle but one of the three was taken into custody and treated at an Oakland hospital, according to Gatpandan.
The other two suspects remain at large, she said.
Officers in San Francisco were unsuccessful in their search for the blue vehicle involved in the shooting but were able to find shell casings at Evans Avenue and Rankin Street, Gatpandan said.
There were no reported victims in the shooting, she said.
