Oakland Coliseum BART Station Reopens After Closure By Police Brutality Protesters Gathered For MLK Day March
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A civil disturbance temporarily closed the Oakland Coliseum/Airport BART station Monday afternoon, transit agency officials said.
BART officials issued a service advisory around 3:50 p.m. announcing the station closure.
The closure at the Coliseum station left hundreds of Golden State Warriors fans stranded since it occured as fans were departing Oracle Arena Monday afternoon following a game against the Denver Nuggets.
The station was reopened just before 4:30 p.m.
The disturbance was related to a protest scheduled for Monday that was dubbed the "Reclaim King's Legacy" march in which the protesters organized to link the civil rights legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with recent protests against police shootings of unarmed black people.
A large crowd of protesters had left the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland earlier Monday afternoon, police said.
Fruitvale BART station was where Oscar Grant III was shot by a BART police officer on Jan. 1, 2009.
The march started moving down International Boulevard as of about 1:30 p.m. Other protesters gathered at 14th Street and Broadway and joined the group that left Fruitvale.
