Players Pick McCutchen Over Posey As NL Player Of The Year
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been named Comeback Player of the Year by his fellow Major League Baseball players, but was beaten out for National League Outstanding Player honors by Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen.
Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera beat out McCutchen and Los Angeles Angels rookie Mike Trout for overall player of the year as voted on by their fellow major leaguers.
Cabrera, the first Triple Crown winner in the big leagues since 1967, hit .330 with 44 homers and 139 RBIs for the AL Central champion Detroit Tigers.
Posey, 25, hit .336/.408/.549 with 24 homers, 103 RBI, 39 doubles and 78 runs for the champion Giants. He was returning this season from a broken leg suffered in May 2011 on an ugly collision at home plate. He's also considered a frontrunner for the NL MVP.
Retiring Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones was voted Marvin Miller man of the year for excellence on and off the field over finalists Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox and Michael Young of Texas in Players Choice voting announced Monday.
Other awards went to Cabrera (AL outstanding player), Tampa Bay's David Price (AL outstanding pitcher) and the New York Mets' R.A. Dickey (NL outstanding pitcher). Trout and Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier were voted the outstanding rookies, and Adam Dunn of the Chicago White Sox was chosen comeback player of the year in the American League.
Voting took place in September.
