Phil Matier: Newsom Targets Maldonado Over Budget Compromise
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has taken the gloves off in his first ad backing his run for lieutenant governor.
The spot playing in the Central Valley and Southern California slams his GOP rival, former state Senator and current Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado, for agreeing to support tax increases other Democrats welcomed during Maldonado's time in the legislature.
Maldonado's compromise helped break a crippling budget deadlock, but was used by Republicans to delay his appointment as lieutenant governor.
KCBS and San Francisco Chronicle Insider Phil Matier said the strategy was designed not to shore up Democratic support but to discourage other Republicans from voting for their party's candidate.
