Phil Matier: Mayor Lee Wants Occupy SF To Relocate To The Mission
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee reportedly wants the city's Occupy protestors to move to the Mission.
KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier said that Mayor Ed Lee's office is talking with members of the movement about relocating its encampment at Justin Herman Plaza to a former high school site on Mission Street between 15th and 16th Street. That's the site of the old Phoenix Continuation High School.
KCBS and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier Comments:
Currently the area looks like a parking lot ringed with portable classrooms contained behind a fence. The city's top public works official took a group representing Occupy SF on a tour of the site over the weekend.
The offer comes after police removed a set of Occupy tents along Market Street just east of Justin Herman Plaza over the weekend.
Matier joked that it might behoove the city to leave the protestors right where they are.
"I'm down there every day at 5 or 6 and you would be amazed at the number of tourists down there taking pictures in front of this thing, waving, to send back home," said Matier.
Meantime, a number of businesses near the current encampment have threatened legal action against protestors.
