Phil Matier: Governor Brown Looks To Bring More Courses Online
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Governor Jerry Brown attended Wednesday's UC Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco, a day after pressing the University of California system to bring more courses online to help make higher education in the state more accessible and affordable.
The governor's proposed 2013-2014 state budget increases funding for both the University of California and California State University systems by an additional $250 million each. In return, he wants colleges to hold down costs and stop raising tuition for students.

Governor Brown was touting a pilot project at San Jose State University on Tuesday which will offer low-cost online classes to students at the university, along with community college and high school students and military veterans.
The program will feature entry-level courses, which are often unavailable or difficult to enroll in because of demand on campuses.

Although the online courses are an important aspect of his overall higher education plan, Brown's ultimate goal is to return California's college system into a more efficient one, getting students an education, getting them degrees and getting them out in a timely fashion, while also keeping costs down.
In his 2013-2014 budget, the governor set aside almost $37 million for state colleges to develop online courses.
