Phil Matier: Cal Vows Memorial Stadium Will Reopen September 1st
BERKELEY (CBS SF) - Officials at UC Berkeley insist the Cal football team will play in the remodeled Memorial Stadium for its season opener on September 1st, even if work is not complete.
According to KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier, an unnamed subcontractor working on the $321 million project said there have been numerous delays ranging from installing the field to fireproofing the press box. The subcontractor went on to say he'll be very surprised if the stadium is completed on time.
A spokeswoman for the university concedes that some of the delays were caused by cold weather and late spring rains. But she said the September 1st game against Nevada is a go, even if there's still work to be done.
KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier:
Work crews are reportedly pulling shifts of up to 12 hours a day and the site is active seven days a week.
Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1923, was closed for renovation after the 2010 football season. The Golden Bears played home games at AT&T Park in San Francisco in 2011.
