PG&E To Give Maps Of Gas Pipelines To Fire Departments
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- After weeks of saying it would not provide maps to fire departments pinpointing the locations of shut-off valves for its natural gas transmission lines, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said it will provide the maps after all.
The utility said Wednesday that it will be turning over the maps to Bay Area fire departments, but is asking the departments not to release the maps to the public.
PG&E spokesman Joe Molica said the company decided to make the maps available after ongoing conversations with local officials. He says all valve locations are being made available to first responders.
The company, whose pipeline exploded in San Bruno in September killing eight people and destroying 37 homes, had said previously it could not provide the maps because of security reasons.
