PG&E Promises To Move Pipeline From San Bruno Neighborhood
SAN BRUNO (KCBS) - Pacific Gas and Electric has promised the damaged section of pipeline that exploded in the Glenview neighborhood will not be rebuilt in its current location.
"You have our commitment that PG&E will not rebuild the damaged section of Line 132 in its current location," PG&E president Chris Johns wrote in a letter hand-delivered Wednesday to San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
Ruane said many residents interested in rebuilding have been waiting for "the definitive decision" that the pipe would not again run beneath the ground near their homes.
"I made it very, very clear to everybody. We can't rebuild that neighborhood if that pipe is still there," Ruane said.
The letter affirming a pledge made in private meetings with city officials was welcome news to Bob Pelligrini, one of 32 homeowners burned out by the Sept. 9 blast. He was also among the original critics demanding the natural gas line be relocated.
"It's almost a uniform feeling of all the residents in our area that that line go away," Pelligrini said.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier praised Johns' letter and urged PG&E to cooperate "with the elected officials in the region to find the appropriate site" for the new line.
