Petaluma Woman Killed In Highway 101 Crash
PETALUMA (CBS SF) - A 20-year-old Petaluma woman was killed in a car crash in Marin County early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Kimberly Augusto was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima north on U.S. Highway 101, about half a mile south of San Antonio Road near Petaluma when her car drifted off the roadway at around 1 a.m. and crashed into a metal guardrail, CHP officials said.
Her car came to a stop on the highway with no hazard or indicator lights.
Raymond Freeman, 46, of Venice, Fla., was driving north on Highway 101 at about 65 to 70 mph in a 2008 Ford E-350 van with three passengers when he saw Augusto's car in the roadway, according to the CHP.
CHP officials said Freeman slammed on the brakes and attempted to avoid Augusto's car but was unable to, and crashed into the driver's side of her Nissan.
Augusto was killed by the impact, which pushed the Nissan into the center divide.
Freeman was not hurt, and the passengers in the van suffered minor injuries.
The CHP closed one lane of northbound U.S. Highway 101 for about four hours as the vehicles involved were removed and an investigation was conducted.
The incident is under investigation, but CHP officials said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
