Peninsula Rep. Jackie Speier Denounces 49ers, NFL Over Recent Domestic Violence Controversies On House Floor
WASHINGTON (KCBS)— Peninsula Rep. Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo/San Francisco) denounced the San Francisco 49ers on the House floor Wednesday for allowing Ray McDonald to play following his arrest for alleged domestic violence.
McDonald, the 29-year-old defensive lineman, was arrested last month at a during his birthday party at his San Jose.
Speaking from the House floor, Speier stood next to an easel with a sign of the viral image of a Cover Girl model that's been used in protest against the NFL and its commissioner, Roger Goodell for its recent troubles and domestic violence controversies.
The image shows a woman with a black eye and text that read: "Tell the NFL to #BenchEm." At the bottom, the image reads: "Domestic violence is not a game."
She talked about his fiancé who was 10 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident and how she showed police bruises on her neck and arms.
"He's played the last two weeks. Why hasn't he been benched?" I'm an avid 49er fan, but this is disgusting."
49ers CEO Jed York has echoed comments from General Manager Trent Baalke and Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, saying the team is letting the legal process play out before deciding on a course of action for McDonald.
Speier concluded "I expect more from my 49ers."
