Peninsula Congresswoman Wants PG&E To Pick Up The Tab
SAN BRUNO (KCBS) -- Peninsula Congresswoman Jackie Speier said PG&E ratepayers should not have to foot the bill for testing of the utility's pipelines for which the company has no documentation, but she said the public should share the costs of new safety regulations spurred by the San Bruno disaster last September.
PG&E reportedly did not know what kind of pipeline ran beneath the neighborhood prior to the explosion. It is unclear how many other unsafe pipes there may be.
"I want the knowledge knowing that it's going to be safe. I think that's one of our fundamental responsibilities of the government [is] to make sure we protect the safety of Americans," said Speier.
Speier has introduced legislation that would beef up the regulation of gas pipeline operators.
