Pelosi Honored At National AIDS Memorial Grove In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi joined hundreds of volunteers Saturday morning at the National AIDS Memorial Grove in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park where she was honored for her work on the issue of HIV/AIDS.
The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus welcomed Pelosi to the AIDS Memorial Grove's first workday of the 2012 planting season.
Grove Executive Director John Cunningham said with this month marking the 25th anniversary of Pelosi's first run for Congress, they wanted to recognize her as a national champion in the fight against the epidemic.
"If you really look at the single individual that is the standard bearer for making sure that those who were discriminated against or didn't have health care or lost their job, it is Nancy Pelosi," he said.
Renderings of a new section of the grove were unveiled. It will be called the Nancy Pelosi leadership pathway.
The leader said she was overwhelmed at the tribute.
"I can't think of anything that surpasses having my name associated with this grove and each and every one of you for what you do," said the House Democratic leader.
Pelosi said it's appropriate for the memorial grove to be in San Francisco and called it a model to the country.
The pathway named in her honor is set to be complete in time for World AIDS day on December 1st.
