Pedestrian On Tracks Killed By Caltrain In San Jose; Service Disrupted
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - A man was struck and killed on the Caltrain tracks in San Jose early Wednesday morning, a Caltrain spokeswoman said.
The man was hit by northbound train No. 217 at about 6:40 a.m., roughly 300 yards south of Southside Drive, south of the Tamien station, spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident caused service delays of up to 40 minutes, Dunn said.
During the disruption, a bus bridge was set up between the Tamien and Diridon stations to accommodate affected riders.
The tracks reopened at about 9:45 a.m., Dunn said.
Dunn said it is not yet clear why the man was on the tracks.
The death came one day after a man was struck and wounded by a train on the Caltrain tracks near the South San Francisco station.
That man was hit at about 6 p.m. Tuesday just south of the station. He survived and was taken to a hospital, Dunn said.
Dunn said Wednesday's death marks the sixth fatality on Caltrain right-of-way this year. There were 16 fatalities in 2011.
