Man Struck And Killed On Caltrain Tracks In Burlingame
BURLINGAME (CBS/KCBS) -- A man crossing Caltrain tracks on the Peninsula Friday morning was struck and killed by a northbound train in Burlingame.
Caltrain spokesperson Christine Dunn said the incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. as the train was pulling into the Broadway station.
"Something that people don't realize sometimes is that anyone who is on the train tracks is actually trespassing," she said.
KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:
The pedestrian was the tenth person killed on Caltrain tracks this year.
Dunn said there were 19 pedestrian deaths last year, which prompted the agency to launch a massive education campaign.
"It's difficult for our train crews and difficult for our passengers and it's something that we take very seriously," said Dunn.
She said the only way to make the tracks completely safe is to build bridges or tunnels over or underneath the tracks.
"The grade crossings are very expensive. We have just started one in San Bruno and the price tag for that is $165 million," she said.
Caltrain upgraded crossings in San Carlos and Belmont years ago and there have been no fatalities at those locations since.
