Pedestrian Hit, Killed By Ambulance On Highway 4 In Antioch
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A pedestrian who died after being struck by an ambulance on state Highway 4 in Antioch late Sunday was identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office Monday as Michael Moore, 62, of Brentwood.
Moore was struck at about 11:30 p.m. after he ran into the path of the ambulance on eastbound Highway 4 just east of A Street, California Highway Patrol Officer F. Meranda said.
The American Medical Response ambulance was traveling about 65 mph in the fast lane when the driver saw a man, later identified as Moore, get out of a white Hyundai Tiburon that was parked on the side of the freeway, Meranda said.
The man ran across lanes and into the path of the ambulance, Meranda said. The driver braked but was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting Moore.
The ambulance stopped at the scene and the crew attempted to administer medical aid to Moore. A second ambulance was called in, but Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators were still looking into why Moore ran into traffic, but Meranda said it did not appear alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
No one else was injured in the collision.
