Pedestrian 'Crawling On Freeway' Struck, Killed On Highway 280
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A pedestrian "crawling on the freeway" was struck and killed on Highway 280 in San Francisco Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol
It happened shortly after 6 a.m. near Alemany Boulevard, CHP Sgt. John Cardoso said. There were conflicting reports on whether the person killed was a woman or a man.
The first call came reporting a person crawling on the freeway clad only in underwear at 6:18 a.m., according to Sgt. John Cardoso. Two minutes later, another caller said the person had been hit.
When CHP arrived the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Cardoso said the coroner will have to check fingerprint and dental records to identify the person. Authorities were trying to determine how many times the pedestrian was hit.
A Sig-alert was issued and southbound lanes were blocked as emergency crews responded to the scene. By 8:20 a.m., three lanes were still closed.
Traffic was backed up for miles and motorists were advised to use alternate routes. No word as to when lanes will reopen.
