Passengers Watch As Engine Sparks Fly From SFO-Bound Plane; Emergency Landing Made In Honolulu
HONOLULU (CBS SF) -- A United Airlines flight from Honolulu to San Francisco safely made an emergency landing Monday night after one of the plane's engines started sparking.
After more than an hour into the five hour flight, the captain of United Airlines flight 396 noticed smoke coming from one of the engines. He was able to fly the plane back to Honolulu and safely land the aircraft.
One passenger captured a video of sparks flying past his plane window.
"Was on the left side of the plane, and i could hear two thumps," he told KITV. "I do a lot of traveling and I knew that wasn't normal. Just a couple of seconds after that you start to see these sparks."
The full plane took off from Honolulu International Airport at 9:32 p.m. and landed back in Honolulu shortly after 11 p.m. where emergency crews were waiting.
No injuries were reported.
United said passengers would be accommodated on another flight to San Francisco on Tuesday.
