Parents, Teachers 'Occupy' Oakland School To Protest Closures
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - In protest of the proposed closure of a handful of Oakland elementary schools as a cost-cutting measure of the Oakland Unified School District, parents from the affected schools, teachers and community members have planned and executed demonstrations over the past few days - most recently, "occupying" Lakeview Elementary school Monday morning.
Dozens were participating in the protest on the school's campus, at 748 Grand Ave., Oakland.
One man was proud to be there with his wife and three children - sleeping in tents on the school courtyard for the past few days.
"We go camping all the time, this is just like camping," he reasoned. "But I also know what we're doing. We've had many talks for many, many hours about what's going on and what we're trying to do. We're trying to stand up for other families, not just in Oakland but our nation. There are hundreds of thousands of families who have been affected by school closures in our nation."

The school district has proposed using the Lakeview campus for administrative offices, instead.
