Parents Of 2-Year-Old Mauled By Dog In Castro Valley Arrested
DUBLIN (KCBS / AP)— The parents of a two-year-old boy mauled by the family dog in Castro Valley early Tuesday morning have been arrested on child endangerment charges. Meanwhile the dog, a pit-bull-German Shepherd mix, has been quarantined.
The family said the attack happened at 2 a.m. in their Castro Valley home on the 21000 block of Gary Drive.
Alameda County Sheriff Sgt. J.D. Nelson said that the arrest of the boy's father, 36-year-old Jared Perkins, and his mother 30-year-old Brandy Gomez, were based not on the attack, but because of the severe state of neglect the deputies found at the home.
Nelson said the residence was un-kept and had feces from the animals in the house. He said the unsanitary conditions were not fit for the boy to live in.
Nelson said the parents offered conflicting accounts of where, when and how the attack occurred.
The boy suffered severe facial lacerations and is being treated at the Children's Hospital in Oakland.
The dog was taken to the East County Animal Shelter, the county's animal control center, where it will remain under quarantine for 10 days to determine whether it is infected with rabies, Nelson said.
