Palo Alto Dump To Close At End Of The Month

PALO ALTO (KCBS) – Already one of the last remaining landfills on the Peninsula, the Palo Alto Landfill and Composting Facility is shuttering on July 28 after more than a hundred years in business.

"Like all other landfills on the Peninsula that are caught in an urbanized area, it's just not efficient to run a landfill any longer," said Palo Alto Environmental Compliance Manager Phil Bobel.

Bobel said that the two main factors behind the closure are that it's reached capacity and people are doing a much better job of recycling.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

"All of that has been driven by state legislation that implores us all to quit throwing stuff away because landfills are filling up," said Bobel. "This is the best and latest example of that phenomenon."

Bobel said an adjacent recycling center will remain open.

Residents and businesses will have to take their excess garbage to the Sunnyvale SMaRT Station.
