Red Sox May Give Slimmer Pablo Sandoval Another Chance
(CBS SF) – It appears that the Boston Red Sox may give Pablo Sandoval another chance.
After winning three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants, the third baseman signed a five-year deal with Boston after the 2014 season. Since then, Sandoval has struggled on the field and with his weight.
CBS Boston sports anchor Dan Roche obtained a picture of a much slimmer Sandoval appearing with Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski during an off-season workout.
Dombrowski told reporters that Sandoval was in "tremendous shape" and manager John Ferrell said the third baseman has an "opportunity to make a major impact on our team next year."
Sandoval has a clear path to the job at third base after the Red Sox traded Travis Shaw, the team's primary third baseman in 2016, to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Sandoval has struggled with weight throughout his career. A former trainer said Sandoval gained 21 pounds in 21 days after the 2011 season, prompting the slugger to undergo an intense training regimen to hide the weight gain from the Giants.
In 2016, Sandoval underwent surgery on his left shoulder, missing nearly the entire season.
