18-Year-Old Arrested In Robbery, Pistol-Whipping Of Orinda Nanny
ORINDA (CBS SF) – An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of pistol-whipping a nanny and stealing a Porsche from an Orinda home on Tuesday afternoon, according to the city's police chief.
During a news conference Thursday, Orinda police Chief Mark Nagel identified Armani Miller, of Oakland, as a suspect in the incident reported around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at a home on El Castillo Court near El Nido Ranch Road.
Although police are investigating whether there was another suspect involved, Nagel said Miller was the man who allegedly pistol-whipped a 53-year-old nanny at the home.
Shortly after he had approached the nanny outside the home while she was raking leaves, Miller allegedly broke into the home, took out a firearm and demanded money and valuables, Nagel said.
He did a room-by-room sweep with the nanny and at some point hit her in the back of the head with his gun, Nagel said. The nanny has since recovered from the laceration she suffered from the blow, the chief said.
The homeowner's 5-year-old daughter was apparently inside the home at the time, but Nagel said it remains unclear how much of the incident she witnessed.
Miller allegedly demanded the keys to a 2012 Porsche Cayenne parked in the home's garage and drove off with two iPads and $100, according to Nagel.
After the incident, police heard from a neighboring resident about a suspicious vehicle nearby.
Nagel said the vehicle, a white two-door Lexus, and its license plate were captured by one of a dozen motion-activated surveillance cameras that Orinda police have installed around the city.
Police are still working to identify another suspect based on the information.
"One person entered the home and obviously someone else was driving the (Lexus), so we're following up on additional leads," Nagel said.
On Wednesday night, Oakland police spotted the Porsche on 35th Street in Oakland. The Lexus was later seen in the area as well, Nagel said.
When Oakland police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the Porsche, there was a short police chase that Nagel was not able to provide many details on.
Apparently it ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into a patrol car, but no one was hurt in the incident, according to Nagel.
Miller was then arrested on suspicion of robbery, kidnapping, carjacking, false imprisonment and assault with a deadly weapon, and was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.
"I'd really like to thank Oakland Police Department, they did an outstanding job," Nagel said. "Kudos to my colleagues through the tunnel."
"And all of our detectives and officers were relentless in pursuing these people," he added.
