'Operation Boo' Detains Transient Paroled Sex Offenders On Halloween
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— State Attorney General Kamala Harris is expanding an annual Halloween child safety project by rounding up transient sex offenders and detaining them at multiple round up centers to make sure they don't come in contact with kids on Halloween.
The unusual move, called Operation Boo, comes as authorities estimate about 2,000 paroled sex offenders have no permanent home. They live on the streets or nomadically in campsites. These numbers have grown since Jessica's law banned offenders from living near schools or parks.
The transient round-up centers will be in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco where these offenders will be ordered to stay from 5 to 10 p.m.
40 of the offenders are in San Francisco alone.
State corrections officers will also visit paroled sex offenders that do have homes, who by law must stay inside their homes with the lights off on Halloween. In addition they are not allowed to give out candy to trick or treaters or display decorations.
Harris, along with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and the head of the state's adult parole division will hold a press conference Monday morning to detail tonight's operations.
