OPD To Deploy Officers At Middle Schools This Fall
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Summer may be in full swing, but school safety is already on the mind of Oakland's police officers - some of whom will be deployed this fall on a new assignment.
The Oakland Police Department is receiving funding from the U.S. Department of Justice's Cops in Schools program, enabling OPD to deploy teams of officers to six middle schools, starting in September.
"So we've received the funding, we've hired the officers, we're training them right now," explained Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan.

According to Jordan, these school safety officers are tasked with multiple duties.
"We see the connection between early intervention and getting them out of trouble and mentoring them," Jordan said. "That's part of their job...to provide security to and from school and to also be mentors in those schools, so we get to the kids before they become problematic and take up guns and create violence in some of the high schools."
