Olympic Spoilers Becoming Difficult To Avoid Online
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) - Lots of people want to go home at night and watch the marquee Olympic events, but in this digitally connected age, it's becoming increasingly difficult to avoid online spoilers.
The New York and LA Times are among news outlets tweeting out the latest Olympic results without even warning of a spoiler to come.
"I've had to stop looking online, period," said Kristy Wilson of San Francisco. "I haven't been checking Facebook. I haven't been checking Twitter. I've actually been avoiding the entire web, because, I like it to be a surprise."
We talked with analyst Larry Magid via Skype...but held him to 140 words at a time.
"I understand there are problems with the networks in London, because so many people are tweeting and texting and updating Facebook. That it's overwhelming some of the data networks," said Magid.
Some news outlets, like KCBS Radio, have figured out creative ways to cover what is legitimate breaking news and still not be a killjoy.
"We tweet that there's a result, and if you want to see what the result is on Twitter, click here and it takes you to our website at CBSSF.com," said Ed Cavagnaro, KCBS News Director.
