Off-Duty Sheriff's Deputy Kills Gunman During Alameda Grocery Store Robbery

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- An off-duty Alameda County Sheriff's deputy fatally shot a gunman and may have wounded a second suspect inside a grocery store in Alameda during an attempted robbery late Thursday night, according to Alameda police.

At 10:32 p.m., Alameda police received 911 calls reporting an armed robbery in progress and gunshots fired inside Bonfare Market, located at 1505 High St.

Officers arrived on scene and made contact with an off-duty Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy who had been shopping inside the store when the robbery occurred, police said.

Oakland police learned that two masked male suspects entered Bonfare Market armed with guns.

According to police, a confrontation occurred inside the market and the deputy feared for his safety, and the safety of the store's employees.

The deputy fatally shot one of the armed suspects and may have also shot the second suspect, police said.

Alameda police Capt. David Boersma said authorities were waiting to talk to a man who arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds shortly after the shooting inside the Bonfare Market at 1505 High St. in Alameda at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The man's explanation to hospital personnel about how he suffered his gunshot wounds did not make sense, Boersma said.

The man's wounds were not life-threatening and police will talk to him as soon as doctors finish treating him, Boersma said.

Neither the store employees nor the Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy were injured, police said.

Detectives interviewed witnesses at the crime scene. Crime Scene Specialists collected evidence and processed the scene, police said.

Authorities closed the store as well as High Street between Central Avenue and Liberty Avenue while they investigated the shooting, he said.

High Street was reopened at about 9:45 a.m. today and the store was permitted to reopen, but its owner has decided to keep it closed for the rest of the day and will reopen it on Saturday, Boersma said.

According to police, suspects using a similar method of operation robbed the Bonfare Market on July 10.
