Off-Duty Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy Killed In Crash
LIVERMORE (CBS/BCN) -- An off-duty Alameda County sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash early Thursday morning north of Livermore, a sheriff's spokesman said Friday.
Marco Ortiz, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was killed in the crash, Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.
Ortiz, 33, was headed home from work to Brentwood where he lived with his wife, who is pregnant with their first child, Nelson said.
The two-vehicle crash was reported at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday on Vasco Road near Los Vaqueros Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the CHP.
"It's tough, he was one of the few guys that's just genuinely beloved," Nelson said. "He was an outgoing guy, with a good sense of humor and good work ethic."
Ortiz worked at the patrol station in San Leandro, where he lived before moving to Brentwood, Nelson said.
"He's going to be missed," he said. "He was a good guy."
