Obama Budget Includes Funding For South Bay BART, SF Subway
SAN JOSE (KCBS) - President Barack Obama's budget proposal contains some great news for transit users in Silicon Valley, including the first installment of the $900 million in federal money needed for a BART extension to San Jose.
The budget also includes $200 million for San Francisco's Central Subway Project and puts it on track for full funding as well.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
$130 million dollars will be the amount of the first installment from the President's budget for a BART extension from Fremont to San Jose.
Bernice Alaniz of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority said it includes the all important request for full funding designation.
"We are very optimistic and thrilled that we have been recommended for a full-funding grant agreement, said Alaniz.
Carl Guardino the head of the Silicon Valley Leadership group said the President's budget support is major for the future of the BART extension.
"This would be the first huge step in that 16.1 mile extension for the two- segment project that we call BART to Silicon Valley," said Guardino.
If Congress approves the initial installment of the $900 million BART extension grant, the rest is expected to be approved as well.
