Oakley Burglars Steal Toys, Food For Needy Kids
OAKLEY (CBS / AP) -- Burglars have stolen toys and food collected by an Oakley community foundation to help the needy during the holidays.
Board members of the Friends of Oakley, a nonprofit association in Contra Costa County, had collected toys and food for 300 needy families, including about 840 children. They were keeping much of the donations at Almond Grove Elementary school.
The goods were discovered missing Tuesday afternoon.
The stolen toys are worth some $4,000, not including food and items such as homemade blankets.
Word spread quickly through Facebook and email Tuesday. Community groups in Discovery Bay, Antioch, and Oakley said they will help replenish the stolen items.
The group is taking collections throughout the city, including City Hall and the foundation's office.
